By: Jonathan Murray MyrtleTalk.com Staff Indian Wells Golf Club, part of Myrtle Beach’s ‘Classic Golf Group’, is a great layout with many memorable holes, great conditions and a very friendly staff. This course is not long at only 6624 yards from the back tees but designer Gene Hamm created a great layout with many demanding shots to make up for its lack of length. Water is one obstacle Indian Wells isn’t lacking, coming into play on most of its holes. Shot making is crucial here but a good score can be had by taking the right risks and playing a little conservative off a few tees. You won’t find a straight hole here so placing your tee shots in the right spot is a must. They have many nice holes here but three seem to stick in your head at the end of the day. These are 15, 16 and 18. As you pass Indian Wells on highway 17 you can see two holes, 15 and 16. Fifteen is a par 5 and sixteen a par 4. These dog leg lefts combine to surround a small pond filled with wildlife and golf balls. Eighteen is a great finishing hole. Water is in play on the left from the fairway to the green with two premium shots needed to have a chance at birdie. Come the beginning of May, the course should be close to fully mature. For the time of year the course is in good shape. The fairways are smooth with a few spots that are still filling in. The greens however are in great shape. They are very responsive on approach and chip shots and roll very smooth on putts. It is evident that they are rigorous when it comes to maintaining the course. The bunkers are well maintained, the water hazards are clearly defined and the course as a whole is manageable and playable. Besides a great course, Indian Wells offers other amenities to complete your golf experience. They have a driving range, two practice greens, and their carts are equipped with onboard GPS systems. Additionally they have a great clubhouse, restaurant, and patio overlooking the 10th Tee box. Indian Wells is a great course for any level player. With prices maxing out at $89 for peak season it is also very reasonable. They give you the opportunity to save with afternoon rates as well. Although a few holes are roadside, that is probably its only weakness. The layout and conditions are above average and it is very easy to enjoy yourself here. There are many courses in the Myrtle Beach area, but if you are looking for a new course to try, Indian Wells is worth every penny. Course Value 8/10: For the price, you would be hard pressed to find a course that would match this golf experience. Course Design 8/10: Gene Hamm really got this one right. Fairway Condition 7/10: They are good, but some areas need to catch up. Green Condition 9/10: Very good. Be confident because a good shot will end in a good result. Overall Condition 7/10: The rough is still growing but soon this course will be a 10. Amenities 8/10: Practice area, restaurant, bar and patio to end a great day.
