    CHILI COOK-OFF CONTEST
Chili cookers can show off skills

Chili cookers are often braggadocios. They boast greatness simply because they believe their chili is the one that smashes all other competition.

With or without crackers, they proclaim their chili is a solid hit one-dish meal that our mouths will marvel.

Well, if you are one of the great chili cookers we have yet to hear about, you can show us your mettle by participating in the "Chilly Chili Cook-Off" being held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 2001 Nightclub, at 920 Lake Arrowhead Road in Myrtle Beach.

It is being held by the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors . The event is a fundraiser for RAFT, the Realtors Assistance Fund Trust. It is a trust that has been established to help Realtors and their immediate families having financial crises due to catastrophic illnesses, said Lisa L. Verkuilen, director of communications.

"They don't get a lot of insurance, and they have to pay for that themselves," Verkuilen said. "If there was a serious illness, it can really be a bad thing and really cause them to struggle and lose what they have."

Today is the deadline to enter. The fee is $20 per person, and anyone, amateur or professional, can compete.

Those, like me, who just want to taste the chili entrees get in free but must pay $1 per taste.

There will be live entertainment by two local bands, the FourClosures and The Ritz.
Cash will be one of the prizes. Contestants will be awarded first, second and third place, as well as a People's Choice award and an award for best decorated booth.
If you want to enter, go to ccarsc.org or call 626-3638.

We'll be there to support two of our friends that are in the contest and have won several chili cookoffs in the past.

I stopped by and had a few bowls. The Clemson table was the best and I really enjoyed the turkey chili on table seven.
